Centralized wage bargaining and skill-biased technical change
نویسنده
چکیده
Last decades have seen substantial changes in some countriescollective bargaining institutions, with a general trend towards more decentralized wage negotiations, specially in the Scandinavian countries. This paper supports the hypothesis that deunionization and decentralization in the wage setting process is a consequence of a skill-biased technical change. The main contribution of the paper relies on the novel way in which unions are modelized and on the way in which they are embeded into a standard model of frictional unemployment

Directed technical change, the elasticity of substitution and wage inequality in developing countries
We develop a model of endogenous skill-biased technical change in developing countries. The model reconciles wildly dispersed existing estimates of the elasticity of substitution between more and less educated workers. It also produces an estimating equation for the elasticity, which allow us to produce overdue estimates for developing countries. With four types of data, we nd an elasticity of...
متن کاملSkill-Biased Technical Change1
Skill-Biased Technical Change is a shift in the production technology that favors skilled over unskilled labor by increasing its relative productivity and, therefore, its relative demand. Traditionally, technical change is viewed as factor-neutral. However, the observed rapid rise in the relative wage of skilled workers in conjunction with an upward trend in their relative supply means that rec...
متن کاملSkill-Biased Technological Change and Rising Wage Inequality: Some Problems and Puzzles
The recent rise in wage inequality is usually attributed to skill-biased technical change (SBTC), associated with new computer technologies. We review the evidence for this hypothesis, focusing on the implications of SBTC for overall wage inequality and for changes in wage differentials between groups. A key problem for the SBTC hypothesis is that wage inequality stabilized in the 1990s despite...
متن کاملIdentifying the Multiple Skills in Skill-Biased Technical Change
US median wages have stagnated for 30 years, yet this masks a surprising amount of variation among different groups. A large literature documents that skill-biased technical change (SBTC) has led to substantial real wage increases on average for those with at least a college degree, and declines on average for those with less education. However, SBTC is not a single dimensional construct. We id...
متن کاملInnovation and Rent Sharing in Corporate Wage Setting in Hungary
Skill biased technical change arrived to Hungary with the transition to market economy. As Hungary integrated into the international economy, technical change progressed much faster in some sectors than in mature market economies. That lead to increasing skill premia, intensive rent sharing, and additional benefits for workers at innovative firms. This paper analyses wage setting at Hungarian f...
